Central Harlem, Featuring 125th Street Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Harlem is stately older buildings, shiny new constructions, and dilapidated structures. Harlem is African American and Latino, with many whites and Asians as well, and in the past it had large Jewish and Italian communities. In the distant past, it was home to Native Americans and Dutch settlers. Harlem has a rich, varied history and a promising future. It had, and still has, various urban woes, but it also has many jewels and joys.
Harlem has ample subway service and several bus lines, as well as a station for the Metro North commuter railroad. It’s bordered by Columbia University and City College, touched by Central Park, Morningside Park, and Thomas Jefferson Park, and blessed with Mount Morris/Marcus Garvey Park and smaller green spaces. It’s home to many grand churches as well as small, modest ones."
