Saranac Lake Duo Professional Review and Guide
"These two tours are centered on the Adirondack community of Saranac Lake. Saranac Lake offers a myriad of year-round Recreational opportunities. For cyclists, this means not only road touring but mountain biking too. The main highways offer paved shoulders. The backroads, while not equipped with shoulders have plenty to offer with great scenery and very little traffic. For mountain bikers there are literally miles and miles of trails and unpaved backroads. Take some protection against loose dogs. Terrain of Tour 1 (30 miles): definitely hilly, but the hills are not major. the longest climb will be outbound on Forest Home Rd. for about 6 miles. In addition to the normal ups and downs, there is another noticeable climb when departing Gabriels (about mile 23) on NY 86. Except for Forest Home Rd., you will have a paved shoulder for the entire trip. Terrain for Tour 2 (36 miles): this is definitely the hillier of the two Saranac Lake tours, particularly between Saranac Lake and NY 30. However, the condition of the road and the fine paved shoulder (not to mention the fantastic scenery) should more than make up for the exertion. Once you start north on NY 30, the road levels out quite a bit. Shortly after making the final turn onto Forest Home Rd., you will (no ifs, ands, or buts) enjoy the 4-mile downhill."
