Not so much a hiking trail, but rather a walking trail. Paved most of the way.

Grand Canyon of the East indeed!!! I would highly recommend this hike for families with children of all ages. We hiked the 6 miles or so along the Gorge Trail from the Lower Falls Restaurant up to the Upper Falls and back. We wisely chose to hike down to the foot bridge at the start rather than the end. (I'd hate to deal with all those steps later in the day.) The hike is very refreshing (bulk is in the shade), not very strenuous (our 8 yr old daughter made it) and awesome (take your camera, the views are incredible). The road comes close to the gorge rim every 1/2 mile or so allowing you to drive back and pick-up family members that choose not to complete the whole circuit. Make sure you park on the Lower Falls end (near the Castile Entrance) because the hike back is all downhill after Inspiration Point.

Detailed Trail Descriptions from Our Guidebooks

Hiking New York (Falcon Guides)
Rhonda and George Ostertag
"Across the Genesee River Gorge from developed Letchworth State Park, this linear foot trail explores the wilder eastern rim. It travels in mixed woods and snares occasional river overlooks of the wending Genesee River punctuated by plummeting sandstone-shale cliffs. Wildlife sightings add surprise. The trail follows sections of a historic canal and rail corridor and makes up part of the Finger Lakes Trail (FLT)."
