Jones Beach Bike Path Professional Reviews and Guides

"This is the premier bike path on Long Island. It runs south from Merrick Road for 5 miles on islands and over channels of the bays that separate the barrier beach from Long Island proper, and it provides the best bicycling experience available for this kind of terrain. Best of all, it terminates at Jones Beach, which itself is an unmatched oceanfront park with golf course, ball fields, skating rink, and other activities plus numerous eateries. To best enjoy this ride, allow a full day for the complete circuit."

"The Jones Beach Bike Path is a multi-use path extending from Cedar Creek Park in Wantagh to Jones Beach State Park, a beachfront park designed by Robert Moses. This barrier island park is more than 2,400 acres and consists of 6.5 miles of Atlantic Ocean beach, a half-mile bay beach, a boardwalk, bike racks, showers, swimming pools, concessions, a museum, and an outdoor amphitheater. An extension of the trail continues on and ends at Tobay, the Town Beach of Oyster Bay.

This beach is beautiful and less busy, thanks to a punitive parking fee for non-residents. Bikes are not allowed in the beach property, but bike racks are installed at the end of the trail. Because the route is so popular and bikes must be locked to access the beach, a hybrid is the recommended bike for this route, unless simply doing an exercise ride at quieter times of day. This ride can be combined with the previous route, Bethpage Bikeway (CR 30), via 3.5-mile connection detailed in that section."

Weather was excellent, it was early in the morning -- although it was slightly crowded, the riders serious and professional. Rode the boardwalk....enjoyed all the beach scenery and it was an excellent day. Really enjoyable. Just go early..
It is closed until I do not know when for repairs.
Excellent if not too windy. Very high traffic level, serious riders should ride early to avoid crowds. Great in fall/winter when you can ride on the boardwalk. Paved and in very good condition. 3-small bridges.
