Riverhead to Iron Pier Professional Review and Guide
"Riverhead is on the edge of the North Fork, at the head of the Peconic River. Similar in many respects to neighboring Southold, this town contains a number of hamlets and villages, with a healthy wine industry. The downtown is a lively commercial district, home to locally owned retail, an eclectic restaurant scene, and the Long Island Aquarium, a regional highlight.
This ride starts in downtown Riverhead, along the Peconic Riverfront Park, and passes near the South Jamesport Beach on a bucolic route to Iron Pier Beach in the north. Both beaches are beautiful, but Iron Pier Beach, surrounded by beautiful farmland full of historic buildings, is usually considered the top destination. You can evaluate both beaches for yourself with a quick 1.6-mile detour, noted in the narrative below. The route is light on hills and should not be particularly challenging."
