Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Covering about 30 acres, Old Forge Pond averages 5 feet deep and has a maximum depth of 9 feet. A 0.5-mile-long channel averaging 3 feet deep connects it to First Lake. The 736-acre First Lake averages 13 feet deep and has a maximum depth of 52 feet. The 262-acre Second Lake averages 51 feet deep and has a maximum depth of 85 feet. The 179-acre Third Lake averages 31 feet deep and has a maximum depth of 59 feet. The largest and most popular lake in the chain, Fourth Lake covers 2,137 acres, averages 33 feet deep, and has a maximum depth of 85 feet. Covering only 14 acres, Fifth Lake averages 10 feet deep and has a maximum depth of 20 feet. The 108-acre Sixth Lake averages 12 feet deep and has a maximum depth of 38 feet. Though it’s separated from Seventh Lake by a navigable bottleneck created by an island and a point, “these lakes are the same, from a management standpoint,” says Rich Preall, the state aquatic biologist on whose beat they lie. The 851-acre Seventh Lake averages 70 feet deep and has a maximum depth of 120 feet. Its shoreline is mostly ringed by forest. The last lake in the Fulton Chain, Eighth Lake covers 303 acres, averages 39 feet deep, and has a maximum depth of 81 feet. The shoreline is almost completely forested and undeveloped. The 205-acre Nicks Lake averages 8 feet deep, has a maximum depth of 17 feet, and is completely surrounded by forest. This eTrail includes Old Forge Pond and First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Lakes. Key species: Largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, lake trout, rainbow trout, landlocked Atlantic salmon, brown bullhead, rock bass, and tiger muskie."
