Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Walk in the footsteps of some of America’s most celebrated artists and see the view that inspired the Hudson River School of painting.

An energetic walk through the grounds of this nineteenth-centur y mansion provides some of the most stunning views of the Hudson River that you can find anywhere along the waterway’s length. Each bend in the trail reveals another sweeping landscape with the river in the background, and even the crush of modern development and technology cannot mar the view enough to discourage you from enjoying these expanses. In addition, the path takes you through the well- maintained and carefully selected plantings in Olana’s lovely gardens, displaying a variety of native flowers as well as some beautiful and unusual exotic plants.

As if all of this loveliness were not enough to make this a worthwhile hike, your exploration of Olana provides a 343-foot change in elevation, making this an excellent cardio hike as well as one that will make you want to linger."

"Walk in the footsteps of some of America’s most celebrated artists and see the view that inspired the Hudson River School of painting. Watch the sun sink low over the Hudson River from the grounds of this majestic home, and you will understand how this magnificent view inspired an entirely new style of landscape painting in the mid-nineteenth century. Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900) lived here in the castlelike mansion at Olana, and his work helped establish the American painting style that came to be known as the Hudson River School. You may want to go inside and tour the house before taking this walk around the grounds to see some of the paintings Church produced while gazing at the river, the Catskill Mountains, and the Taconic Hills from his studio. Translating these miracles of nature to canvas, Church became one of the most celebrated artists of the Hudson River School, rising to considerable popularity during his lifetime—enough to purchase this property and build the Middle East–inspired home in which he lived with his wife and children."
