Hike through woods, fields, and marshes in a remnant of the Long Island that once was. There are many parks and open spaces on Long Island today, but almost none in northern Nassau County that are open to the public. The vast wooded estates where F. Scott Fitzgerald imagined Jay Gatsby chasing Daisy still evoke the visions they did, but they have been subdivided into smaller estates today and are still as private. In one place, however, that untamed Long Island that Fitzgerald saw in the closing passages of The Great Gatsby still exists. Three former estates have been combined into the 550-acre Muttontown Preserve, the largest nature preserve in the county.
