Muttontown Mystery Trail

Muttontown Mystery Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"You don’t have to be a fan of murder mysteries or obscure Albanian history to enjoy wandering the woods of Muttontown, not with such an appealing variety of habitats tucked into the domain.

A vast network of trails and old estate lanes weaves through swampy swales, miniature savannas, a rhododendron jungle (that transforms in July into a fairyland of pale-pink blossoms), some glacial deposits, and even a few ghostly ruins. Of course, if you do have a thing for unsolved mysteries, so much the better."

"Loop through the mysterious trails of Muttontown Preserve to uncover aging ruins, hidden treasure, a walled garden, and rolling, open fields on some 550 acres of preserve."

The trails at Mercer County park are always a pleasure to walk, regardless of season. On a 40 degree sunny winter day, half of the trails were in a snow covered forest, and the higher elevation trails were only sparsely covered with snow. The trails are well maintained. There are no blazes to mark the off-asphalt trails, but the woods are small enough so that you don't get lost. Very enjoyable walk or hike... saw a few mountain bikers sharing the trails. Dogs are a common sight.
