Safford Pond Trail Professional Review and Guide
"The trip follows a snowmobile trail for a total distance of 10 miles and puts you in contact with two beautiful, wild, and uninhabited ponds. Located in the Fulton Chain Wild Forest, the dense conifer trees make the primeval woods dark and mysterious. This out-and-back route is 5 miles in one direction and begins at the Safford Pond trailhead on Big Moose Road. The trail traverses fairly level terrain along a wide singletrack. West Pond, a small pocket of fresh water with an attractive waterfall at the drainage point, is reached in just about 1 mile. Look for the old beaver dam and swamp. Safford Pond is a little farther along at 4 miles. The pond has a fine pebble beach and good swimming. The route ends at Lake Rondaxe 5 miles later. Located northeast of the village of Eagle Bay near Big Moose Lake, in Herkimer County in the west-central region of Adirondack Park, northeastern New York. The beginning of the trail climbs slightly to about 1,900'. After the spur trail to West Pond the trail descends moderately to 1,800' for about 2.5 miles until you reach Safford Pond. It is all level riding after Safford Pond to the trail's end at Lake Rondaxe."
