Dover Stone Church

Dover Stone Church Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"An exquisite little trail leads to a cathedral-ceilinged cave with its own interior waterfall. In the 1630s the Pequot grand sachem (chief) Sassacus used this cave on the Stone Church Brook as a hideout to escape English soldiers hunting for him.

The English were only one of this chief’s worries, however. The Pequots dominated the Mohegans, another tribe in the New London, Connecticut, area, led by sachem Uncas. The Mohegans joined forces with the English to rebel against Pequot rule, a conflict history records as the Pequot War—and one that Sassacus lost rather spectacularly."
