Minnewaska State Park Preserve, Sam's Point Area: Loop Road to the Ice Caves Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"There’s nothing like a naturally chilled cave on a hot summer day. This hike through a portion of Sam’s Point Preserve, a unit of Minnewaska State Park Preserve, delivers a double treat—especially if you’re trying to beat the heat. First, you can enjoy one of the most spectacular views available of the park and surrounding area from Sam’s Point, a wide stone ledge (or a second, slightly higher ledge) that provides a 270-degree countryside panorama.
Second, you can continue from the point to the Ice Caves, a labyrinth of staircases, corridors, squeezes, climbs, and wet spots that can include mounds of snow and slippery ice—even in the heat of July."
