Hudson Highlands State Park

Hudson Highlands State Park Professional Review and Guide

"Leave the antiques stores and family-run restaurants of Cold Spring behind for a day hike through an easily accessible part of Hudson Highlands State Park. Gaze across at Storm King, watch the boat traffic plying the currents on the Hudson River below, and enjoy spectacular views all the way to the Catskills on clear days."

More Hudson Highlands State Park Professional Reviews and Guides

"This trip from one train station to another travels over the Hudson Highlands’ two most challenging peaks, which offer sweeping viewpoints of the river, mountains, and other sights. Summits are optional. On weekdays, there are two stations between Peekskill and Beacon along Metro- North Railroad’s Hudson Line. The Breakneck Ridge and Manitou request stops come into use on the weekends, giving hikers from New York City and Westchester numerous options to avoid driving and reduce their carbon footprints as they savor the great outdoors. This route is designed for hikers who would like to go from station to station through Hudson Highlands State Park. The hike is challenging, but also rewarding when you see the stunning scenery. It is strenuous enough that you will appreciate sitting back in your seat on the way home without having to worry about driving."

This is a hidden gem in Bedford, and well recommended for anyone. We saw a little bit of one house, and that was it, in 2 hours of hiking. In the Summer I bet you can't see an house. I have never seen trails better marked. It must have been an Eagle Scout project! The only draw-back is the sound from 684, but it goes quickly once you go inland from the highway and doesn't come back until right before the end of the hike.

This is a really nice hiking area. It was a great workout. Note of caution, this trail guide classifies it as "easy", which some of the trails may be, since they have a few different trail options. However the one I took was much more difficult than I expected. I still enjoyed the trail but was not quite prepared for the steepness of some of the hills.
