Cohoes National Heritage Trail Professional Review and Guide
"This massive natural cataract powers most of eastern New York State. Named by the Iroquois long before Europeans arrived in the New World, written about in Dutch colonists’ memoirs and poets’ letters since the 1600s, and sketched and painted by explorers and artists for centuries, Cohoes Falls makes an unforgettable impression from its very first viewing. This gargantuan cataract stands nearly as tall as Niagara Falls and is wider than Niagara’s American Falls, stretching out at roughly 1,000 feet across the mighty Mohawk River. The most interesting comparative statistic, however, involves the quantity of water fl owing over Cohoes’s ledges: While Niagara flows at 5,000 to 21,000 cubic feet per second."
