Letchworth State Park: Lower, Upper, and Middle Falls Area Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Explore “The Grand Canyon of the East” for a touch of early American history and some of the best scenic waterfall views in upstate New York. For thousands of years after the last ice age, the Genesee River—a waterway whose course altered significantly when glacial activity relocated it—wore a deep crevasse into the earth here at the south end of its length.
The river continues north to Rochester, until it finally empties into Lake Ontario, but this state- protected area contains its most dramatic canyon, accented by three powerful waterfalls in the space of 2 miles. Geologists believe that these falls formed sequentially as the glaciers melted,
retaining the meltwater in temporary lakes until erosion took the flow over the side."
