If I'm not mistaken, this is the largest plot of uncut original forest in NY. The NYBG can definitely be described as an oasis in the middle of the city - it's almost surreal.

I think the best way to get there is to take the trolley in the gardens, then hop off and hike the trail. The trolly has a small cost but you can purchase tickets at the entrance.

You can canoe here through the Bronx River Alliance - something that not many people realize. But the BIG thing not to be missed is that you'll want to bring your binoculars and bird watch!!! You can catch site of all sorts of birds here. There is also a tour hike if you want a guide to lead you through. Definitely worth a day.

As an aside, the cafe is decent albeit expensive. In the warmer months the taco truck should not be missed!!!
