The dam in Churchville creates a backwater that’s deep enough to paddle even in summer. At Route 19 we found 4-foot-deep water in a narrow channel that widened the further downstream we went. Blowdowns had been cleared, creating an easy passage. The channel is open to the powers of the sun, so wear sunscreen. You could easily put in at one of the other two access sites and paddle this area as a round trip.

I put my pack canoe in at the public boat launch in Churchville and paddled upstream to Route 19, great trip on a partially sunny morning. Brought my single paddle thinking the creek would be narrow in spots, but not so; double would have been fine. Easy paddle, even against the minimal current. Lots of twists and turns to explore or watch birds. Only regret was not bringing a fishing pole! Matt C.

I put in at the bridge on Route 19 just before Bergen. I paddled East towards Churchville. My time was limited so I only paddled a mile of Black Creek. What I experienced was vey enjoyable. About 10 minutes in you will stop hearing traffic from the roads. In the little time I had a so two heron, and countless painted turtles. I found Black Creek to be scenic and well maintained. There are plenty of sections of Black Creek that branch off and it's fun to explore the different waterways. I look forward to spending more time paddling Black Creek.
