Mianus River Gorge Trail

Mianus River Gorge Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"A great gorge and reservoir vistas, old-growth hemlocks, an intricate network of 19th-century farmstead walls, glacial erratics, and granite outcroppings highlight one of the better short treks in the region. Mianus is at its best in springtime, when the streams and cascades are most watery—but its cool, well-shaded paths also offer a respite from the heat of summer."

Great trails but beware, Sandy took a major toll on this area. The Red trail is pretty much impassable in several spots. Preserve may be closed for a while until they can fix things up.

This is a beautiful trail, well-maintained and wonderfully laid out, so that while it is a relatively easy hike, it offers excellent dramatic views, with the steep, narrow gorge on one side and the colonial stone wall on the other. On our visit, in August, after the hottest summer on record, the river was low, the cascade was just a muddy draw...but the real attraction here is the old-growth forest -- hemlock, tulip, beech, birch, maple, many with three-foot trunks and straight and true for 100 feet or more...also saw deer, no refuse, few other people.

My husband and I really enjoyed it. We loved that it was mostly in the shade, keeping us cool, and was very beautiful. Took some nice pictures also. We walked it faster then we thought we would. Your map was excellent. the people working there were so very nice and helpful. Would definitely recommend it to someone looking for a little challenge and complete isolation.

A nice moderate/easy hike follows down the Mianus River on the Brink of Gorge Trail . The mid-loop is a great view of the S.J. Bargh Reservoir at Havemayer Falls (2.75 miles from head of trail) . Back part of loop via Fringe of Forest Trail is a nice wind-down home.
