D&H Canal Heritage Corridor South Professional Review and Guide

"Completed in 1828, the Delaware & Hudson Canal was the first million-dollar private enterprise in America. During its seventy years of active duty, it was the main economic artery for the Northeast. It was built to transport anthracite coal from Pennsylvania mines in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area to eastern markets. Not all the 90 miles of off-road travel in the corridor in New York State is open to the public, but some significant sections are accessible. For the experienced rider on a hybrid bike, the entire corridor could be traveled by linking together a variety of canal, towpath, rail-trail, and significant road sections with wide shoulders. The preservation of the corridor is alive and well due to several historical societies and museums. The D&H Canal Heritage Alliance, an all-volunteer organization, is spearheading the conversion of many segments along the corridor in New York State. Surface: Crushed stone."
