Silvermine Lake to Black Mountain Trail

Silvermine Lake to Black Mountain Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"From the base at Silvermine Lake to the peaks of Black Mountain, this 6.5-mile loop hike offers a bit of everything for hikers and their trail companions. Dug by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, Silvermine Lake—like most lakes in Harriman State Park—was made by hardworking men and filled via the creation of a dam.

Also along this hike is the notable Spanish Mine whose history tells of a group of Spanish men who came every year to mine the northern side of Black Mountain. Although the mine was never located after it was abandoned in the mid-1700s, the tales of events in that area still raise curiosity to this day."

Excellent moderate hike. Trails clearly marked. At Appalachian crossing, you can cut 2 miles off hike by taking the white w/ red dot trail. Beware of ticks. We removed many so check yourself frequently and at home afterwards. Try to pick sunny clear day to optimize views of NY skyline. We had cloudy day and it was barely visible.

Great trail. Very little traffic and a couple of solid climbs. Only downside was a seemingly long stretch of road to get back to the trailhead towards the end.
