Island Pond Loop Trail

Island Pond Loop Trail Professional Review and Guide

"On land originally owned by Edward H. Harriman in the early 1900s, the Island Pond Loop is a hidden gem in the northwest corner of Harriman State Park.

Easily accessible from the New York State Thruway or Metro-North railroad, the trails surrounding Island Pond and the pond itself provide a multitude of opportunities for both hikers and dogs to enjoy themselves in nature. The hike travels across easy to moderate terrain with several stops for doggie swims and scenic views."

Good loop hike, rather than an out-and-back, which will take you around Island Pond and past some interesting areas (e.g. Lemon Squeezer). Yeah, the distance is more than posted in the guide. I'd call it a 5 mile hike; just guessing.

The trail is beautiful, but the first reviewer is right-distances are WAY off. First of all, it's almost 6 miles from the Tuxedo station to Arden Valley Road. It's also along the highway, and the police seem to take notice of folks with backpacks whar are 'out for a stroll'; they were quite friendly, though. Harriman station appears to be much closer. Also, there are so many trails in the area that it would have been helpful to include some sort of directions like "when you see yellow blazes off of Island Pond Road, you know you have gone too far," We had a great time on this hike, but, in the future, we will exercise skepticism before relying on distances posted here.

This route is a nice trail to do with a dog, however the distance is very incorrect. Following the route described in the guide the mileage is actually 5.5 miles.
