Few names are as closely associated with fabulous nineteenth century wealth as Cornelius “Commodore” Vanderbilt, the richest man in America in his day. This opulent property belonged to his grandson, Frederick Vanderbilt, who purchased it in 1895. Frederick owned the New York Central Railroad, which passed close to the estate, so he and his family knew that this spot afforded them exceptional views of the Hudson River. The property had fallen into benign neglect when the Vanderbilts acquired it, but Frederick saw the potential in the natural setting and expansive grounds, allowing his love of nature to guide him in selecting a summer home he would share with his wife and children."
