Five Rivers Enviromental Education Center: North Loop Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This well-tended trail leads along an exquisite meadow, into the woods, and along wetlands for a full range of natural sights. Originally New York’s first state-run experimental game farm, Five Rivers’ long legacy of environmental education and stewardship began back in the 1930s, when the Civilian Conservation Corps built facilities for the study of ruffed
grouse.

Over the ensuing forty years, the game farm advanced to the forefront of environmental research and conservation, and we owe many modern techniques to the successful work completed here. A walk through the woods can still reveal the easy-to-
flush grouse, as well as dozens of other bird species, a plentiful supply of eastern chipmunks and eastern cottontails, the occasional white-tailed deer, and other critters that thrive in this unusual preserve."
