Winchell Lake Trail

Winchell Lake Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The journey to Winchell Lake takes hikers and backpackers into the heart of the east side of remote East Humboldt Wilderness. A distance of 3 miles and a mild 1000-foot elevation gain make for a relatively gentle trip, but despite this ease, the trail sees little use.

En route to the lake you'll encounter numerous creeks and rivulets that refresh pockets of lush riparian habitat. The trail provides excellent views of the East Humboldt Mountains from various localities, and lovely subalpine scenery at two lake basins, one along the way and one that holds the lake. A campsite at Winchell Lake offers scenery, solitude, potential for further wanderings, and the opportunity to wake up to an awesome sunrise."

The trail is overgrown but we did not see any poison oak. I would suggest using a tick spray before this hike to be safe. It was a very hot day, and the cold stream water really helped to keep us cool. We passed 4-5 streams. Use them! There were cattle on the path. Move slowly around them.
We hiked mid July and the area was covered in wildflowers and butterflies. Very beautiful and well worth the effort.

Well, this trail was rated 2 in difficulty and we had just walked the Lamoille Creek Trail the day before, which was rated 8. I think that Winchell Lake Trail was at least an 8 when we did it....trail isn't kept up at all and we were wading through jungle brush for alot of the way.Wear long pants, for sure. The trail itself is alot of up and down, so you get a rest between "up" spells, and the Lake is one else there....great for skinny dipping!...but bring insect repellent. The flies were plentiful, but not too bothersome, really.
