The steep Sierran canyon that restrains the Truckee River opens up at Verdi, and this nature trail, an educational gem for schoolchildren and adults alike, explores the unique environment of this foothills transition zone. This little loop is about as charming as a day hike can be. Much like the schoolchildren it caters to, the trail is sweet, honest, and playful . . . and also spiced with surprises that are best appreciated when you walk slowly and carry the interpretive guide keyed to signposts along the track. Couple the hike with a picnic in nearby Crystal Peak Regional Park (a Washoe County park) on the banks of the Truckee River for a great family outing.
