South Twin River Overlook Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"An easy day hike to a spectacular canyon in the Toiyabe Range. This is an easy hike with a short, graded access road in a mountain range where most of the hikes are difficult and the access roads long. Hikers passing by on NV 376 can complete this hike in an hour or so, and get a quick idea what treats await deeper in the mountains.
The South Twin River Trail is part of the Toiyabe Crest National Recreation Trail and visible from the trailhead as it climbs the mountainside in a large switchback. (Ignore the road going into the creek.) This hike takes you up the switchback to the first saddle. From this vantage point, 500 feet above the trailhead, there is a fine view of the lower South Twin River Canyon, with its cascading mountain stream, cottonwood trees, and towering rock walls. In contrast, the vast Smokey Valley spreads out to the north, and the buttresses forming the east slopes of the Toiyabe Range march off into the distance."
