North Twin River Loop

North Twin River Loop Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"A long day hike or overnight backpack trip through a series of spectacular canyons in the Toiyabe Range. This is a loop hike using the South Twin River and North Twin River Trails. Although it can be done in one long day, there are enough side attractions to make this a two-or even three-day backpack trip."

I had a great time on this trip, but relied upon the information provided in the North Twin River South Twin River Loop from the guidebook "Backpacking Nevada". This was a much more accurate guide than Bruce Grubb's "Hiking Nevada", where he doesn't even mention the numerous stream crossings required. Check out my review of the North Twin River South Twin River Loop Trailm, along with photos.

While the first 3 miles of canyon are beautiful, be prepared for 28 river crossings before you reach open countryside. If you are trying to complete the north twin to south twin loop, beware, the trail becomes very hard to follow around the 9000 feet point. There are only a handful of good campsites, most which have a lot of evidence of previous inhabitants--humans and cattle. I've never seen so much scat on a trail (horse, bighorn sheep, cow, deer, and mountain lion, in that order).

Starting at the pristine and empty Columbine Campground the trail snakes up thru vast aspen forests, some huge with basque pornographic carvings in them. Traversing the stream the trail ascends steeply up what eventually turns out to be a false summit. The trail actually descends significantly twice and is quite a heartbreaker that all that climing was just to go back down before the summit.
