Oxbow Nature Study Area Loop Professional Review and Guide
"Tour the last pocket of riparian wildland along the sparkling Truckee River within Reno’s city limits and witness how nature recovers after fire.Flanked by railroad tracks, local businesses, and apartment complexes, the setting for Oxbow Nature Study Area is distinctly urban. But within the park’s boundaries, you are insulated from the city by greenery, birdsong, and the soothing rumble of the Truckee River rushing over its rocky bed.For the next few years, the nature study area will be in a state of transition. A human-caused fire burned about eighteen of the park’s twenty-two acres in April 2008, taking out some of the grand old cottonwoods that thrived in the dense riparian zone and the boardwalk and interpretive signs that guided exploration of the area. A new loop trail—bordered by unfinished fences and new plantings still in their protective plastic grow tubes—was in place by spring 2009 and is described here."
