High and dry, the Huffaker Hills open on expansive views across the Truckee Meadows to the summits of Mount Rose and Slide Mountain. An easy trail rambles through these distinctive formations in the foothills of the Virginia Range. Views from this rocky desert trail spread past the soft browns of the Twin Peaks onto the stony heights of Slide Mountain and Mount Rose, and across the Truckee Meadows, silver and green with development and pockets of open space. The towers of Reno’s casino district rise to the northwest, with the rounded mass of Peavine Peak behind. Huffaker Hills are part of a ranch established by Granville Huffaker in the nineteenth century. Huffaker homesteaded here in 1859 with 500 head of cattle, which he intended to sell to the men burning massive amounts of calories in the mines of the Comstock in nearby Virginia City.
