The Huffaker Hills, a group of volcanic buttes sprinkled along the east side of the Truckee Meadows, provide prominent landmarks for local residents, especially the highest of the group, 6,011-foot Rattlesnake Mountain. Although beacon-topped Rattlesnake Mountain is currently private property, the lower hills to the south are open to public use, which has become much more desirable with the recent construction of a new trailhead and accompanying trails.
