Spirit Mountain Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"On this trip, you can explore and climb a sacred, geologic wonder. Spirit Mountain is sacred to the Native Americans of the region. It is also on the National Registry of History places.

In deference to its many scenic, natural, and cultural values, Congress designated 33,500 acres of this area as the Spirit Mountain Wilderness in 2002. Combined with the Newberry Wash Wilderness to the north and the Bridge Canyon Wilderness to the south, the Spirit wilderness complex protects more than 58,000 acres of natural landscape. Vehicle: Passenger car."

Along with 14 1/2 hikers (one was a seven year old who rode his grandpa's back most of the way), we followed a great leader to the summit. This was more difficult than the grand canyon, with little in the way of clear trails to the top. If it were not for markers every 10-15 feet to keep you on track, you could chance gettng lost or in dangerous trouble. This is rough terrain, but most of us made it. Two stopped short of the top and waited for our return. It took us abut 8 hours round trip. The distance was debatable, since most of the hike consists of scrambling to the 5,800 ft peak. Views are tremendous.
