This loop trail passes through an extensive stand of ancient bristlecone pines. This is one of the few Spring Mountains trails open to mountain bikers. just left. These are exactly the conditions that bristlecone pines favor. In fact, the Spring Mountains have extensive stands of bristlecones: some 18,000 acres. At first, the trail heads southwest up a canyon bottom filled with an alpine forest of fir and aspen. After the Bristlecone Trail makes a sharp right turn and climbs out of the canyon to the north, it crosses a more exposed slope where living conditions are much tougher than the canyon bottom. These are exactly the conditions that bristlecone pines favor. In fact, the Spring Mountains have extensive stands of bristlecones: some 18,000 acres. Bristlecone pines actually do grow well below timberline, where they are taller and more slender than their gnarled timberline counterparts.
