Wheeler Peak Trail Professional Reviews and Guides

"A trail to the highest summit in the Snake Range and the second highest summit in Nevada, located within Great Basin National Park. Follow the Summit Trail as it climbs gradually southwest through stands of aspen along the southern slopes of Bald Mountain.

Openings in the forest provide outstanding views of Wheeler and Jeff Davis Peaks. The Alpine Lakes Trail joins from the left; continue a short distance west, then turn sharply right onto the signed Wheeler Peak Trail."

An awesome hike. You start at 10,000 feet, so this is a good way to bag a 13-er. The very last portion of the trail has a lot of exposure if you don't like heights.

Great Area of the Western US. Arrived in Great Basin National Park at 4:00PM and arrived at the summit of Wheeler around 7:00PM the same day with cloudless skys and a terrific hikking moon for the descent. The trails in this national park are well maintained and it would be very difficult to lose the trail accending or decending Wheeler. Great parks staff, and great camp sites for "Car Camping".

Awesome views, missed the peak by 2-3 hundred feet due to very exposed snow field. Will definately try again.

Starting from the campground the trail ascends thru forest with open vistas. A long traverse up the spine of the mountian is beautiful. The summit comes up rapidly and unexpected with great cliffs.
