Black Rock Hot Spring

Black Rock Hot Spring Professional Review and Guide

"An immense pool of aqua-blue water on the northern reaches of the Black Rock Desert. The spring is incredibly hot, and all precautions should be taken to avoid serious injury. The spring itself is a massive pool extending to unknown depths. This water is extremely hot, so take all precautions and keep a close hold on children and pets. Although the spring itself is extremely hot, the water does flow out onto a small marshy area where the water cools off considerably. Black Rock Hot Spring is far from civilization and can only be reached a few months of the year. Getting there requires following little more than tire tracks. The spring nevertheless—or because of these factors—is a fantastic place to visit. The entire Black Rock Desert spreads out before you, and the brilliant water dazzles your eyes. Be sure to plan ahead for the trip, and inquire locally about playa conditions before you depart."

A wooden walkway leads you to the pond. Yes, it is very hot, however, we were able to soak right at the small pier. I would estimate 112 to 115. The drive over the Playa is easy for a standard auto, however, the last several yards up to the Hot Spring required 4wd. There is an old Wagon right at this spring.

Best: The springs can only be reached when the playa is completely dry. This will usually be during the months of August, September, and early October. Do not under any circumstances try to get there when there is standing water on the playa or if it is wet in any way.
