Matterhorn Loop Trail

Matterhorn Loop Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"A very long trail and cross-country day hike or 2-day backpack trip over the major peaks of the Jarbidge Crest featuring spectacular views of much of the Jarbidge Mountains. The Jarbidge River Trail starts out as an old road and becomes a foot trail as it climbs up the canyon. The forest is open, and there are excellent views.

Partway up, an old trail is visible as it branches to the right into an area of avalanche debris. The amount of destruction caused by snow avalanches can be awesome. In remote areas such as this, they are only a hazard to backcountry travelers, but in developed areas such as ski resorts or mining camps they can be very destructive. Several mining camps in the western mountains of the United States were destroyed by avalanches in the 19th century."
