Skunk Harbor

Skunk Harbor Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"A broad, steep track leads down to Skunk Harbor, a secluded bay where the clear water of Lake Tahoe washes in a rainbow arc onto the stone-strewn beach, melting from indigo to turquoise to gold as it approaches the shore.

An “upside down” hike, with the climb on the return trip, you can prepare for the ascent by enjoying lunch and resting in the front yard of the old Newhall House."

"An unfortunate name for a favorite trail, Skunk Harbor is no stinker. Instead, a broad, steep track leads to a secluded bay where Tahoe’s clear water washes in a rainbow arc onto a crescent beach, melting from indigo to turquoise to gold as it approaches the shore. As if a sandy beach, sunbaked rocks, and cool, clear water weren’t enough to draw hikers down to Skunk Harbor, the little cove is also the site of the picturesque Newhall House, built in 1923 as a wedding gift from George Newhall to his wife, Caroline." Lovely cove , beach and views. Go early for parking on the road. Crowded on summer weekends - the beach can be full of anchored boats.Serene during off season. A side trip to the meadow during spring for wildflowers.

Shh...don't tell anyone about this hike. It's not the hike, it's the quiet, sheltered harbor. Perhaps a downfall may be more recreational boats in high summer.

A great treat awaits you at the bottom of this trail. The trail itself is a bit too open and road-y for my taste, but the beach at the bottom is one of the most peaceful and beautiful places on earth!

a very nice wide road trail to a beautiful beach on Lake Tahoe. It is all uphill on the return, but well worth the work.
