Cathedral Gorge

Cathedral Gorge Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"A series of easy trails in Cathedral Gorge State Park. Cathedral Gorge was formed from layers of ancient lake deposits known as the Panaca formation.

These sediments were deposited on the bed of an ancient lake approximately one million years ago. As the climate changed and the lake dried up, erosion exposed the soft siltstone and clay shales and began to carve them into the fluted shapes seen today."

Respectfully, "Stunning" is an exaggeration. Definately worth experiencing once. Not as interesting or inspiring as other regional trail or parks. In no way would this compare to Zion Natioanal Park.

Very nice and easy walk. It's good when it's cool. Make sure to take camera. The formations are stunning.

This trail is most spectactular on the east side of the canyon. I would recommend going up the east side of the trail to the end of the canyon and returning on the same route rather than doing the full loop. Distance is slightly less than posted. Hike is easy and recommend doing it in the early morning or late evening. Summers will be hot.Do not forget to take the trail to the overlook. This trail puts you into the eroded mud spires and worth the detour. You can enter some of the narrow openings in the spires at the day use picnic area. Do not miss this experience.
