Rattlesnake Canyon

Rattlesnake Canyon Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This is definitely one of the most scenic and accessible trails in Carlsbad Caverns. Yet, like most other surface trails in the park, you're likely to have the trail all to yourself. Rattlesnake Canyon is a large, open valley where you can quietly soak in the true essence of the Chihuahuan Desert and the rugged individuality of its plants and animals.

If you plan to take a cave route, consider getting up early and hike Rattlesnake Canyon when the temperature is lower and the wildlife is out in force. Then, visit the cave in the afternoon."

"The overwhelming majority of the Chihuahuan Desert lies south of the international border in Mexico, but arms of the desert reach up the Rio Grande and Pecos River valleys to embrace a portion of New Mexico. While monotypic stands of creosote bush cover the vast majority of this desert’s area, it is the thick-leaved succulents that are its defining species. Make sure to carry plenty of water."
