Guano Road Trail Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"This might be the most convenient way to experience the "other" Carlsbad Caverns, the world above ground. This trail follows the ridge just south of the paved road from Whites City to the park headquarters. Even though you never get far from the highway, much of the trail is out of sight and sound of the road.
You can start at either end, but for the easiest route start at the Bat Flight Amphitheater. This makes the trail a gradual downhill walk the entire way. Since this is a shuttle, transportation can be a problem. One idea is to take your trip into the cavern and then, instead of your entire party driving down to Whites City, somebody can volunteer to drive down, allowing the rest of your group to take a great desert hike and warm up after the coolish visit to the depths of Carlsbad Cavern. If you’re early for your cave trip, you can do this in reverse. One person can drive up to the headquarters while the rest of the party hikes up from Whites City. From a geologist’s perspective this trail starts at the base of the Capitan Reef and climbs to the top, where the caverns are located. From a hiker’s perspective it’s an extra-pleasant stroll through a desert environment."
