Chihuahuan Desert Nature Trail Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"This trail is for everybody. It's entirely paved, has lots of interesting interpretation, and is accessible to people with mobility impairments. You can take the short loop in either direction, but the interpretive signs are set up in a counterclockwise sequence. There are benches for relaxing along the way. In one stop, about halfway around, you get a expansive view of the desert basin to the southeast.
If you plan to watch the grand exit of bats from Carlsbad or if you plan to visit the cave, plan on getting to the headquarters area a half-hour early and take a leisurely stroll around this trail first. The trail is closed during the bat flight to avoid disturbing the bats. The interpretive signs along the trail give you a great introduction to desert flora and how native cultures used desert plants."
