San Mateo Peak

San Mateo Peak Professional Review and Guide

"A day hike to a high peak in the heart of the remote Apache Kid Wilderness.

The trail to San Mateo Peak, described here, is probably the most popular in the mountains, which does not mean much. The San Mateos are one of the least visited mountain ranges in New Mexico. What little visitation occurs is usually restricted to the roads and campgrounds. Even on summer weekends and during deer season, you will probably see few people on this trail. Other trails are even more likely to be deserted. Come to the San Mateos for solitude or if you’re hiding from the IRS."
