This hike uses Barts Trail, an alternate way to reach the beautiful South Sandia Peak area along the Sandia Crest. Walk up the road to the trailhead for Barts and Canoncito Trails, then take the Barts Trail up the slope to the west. Barts Trail crosses Faulty Trail, then climbs steadily to end at the Crest Trail. Turn left and follow the Crest Trail south along an especially scenic section, with views both east and west. The saddle just north of South Sandia Peak where the Crest Trail leaves the crest is the turnaround point for this hike. Beyond this point, the Crest Trail skirts South Sandia Peak along its east slopes.
