Columbine Canyon To Hondo Canyon

Columbine Canyon To Hondo Canyon Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"More than a century ago, miners blasted tunnels in the walls of Columbine Canyon, and the slopes bear the scars of the search for treasure. Throughout the Sangre de Cristo range around Red River, miners combed the canyons for silver and gold deposits.

A few found gold in the gravels of Columbine Creek, and the lure of yellow metal still attracts prospectors to the stream. Although hikers can take a gold pan and try their luck, they are more likely to find a bonanza in the form of abundant wildflowers, luscious wild strawberries, or bronze native trout."

The hike was beautiful - up to the point where the bridge is washed out and found the Red River absolutely impassable. It is a rather steep descend into the gorge, with wonderful views up and down the gorge. Definitely worth the trip!

We were a little confused by the description of how to get to the trail head. Once you turn onto FR-9, simply stay on it! It is a gravel road and other "tracks" veer off to the right and left, but they are obviously not gravel roads. It is possible to stay left after 1 mile on FR-9, but it leads you along a horribly rutted path into no-where. We turned back and found the trailhead at the end of the gravel road - very simple.

Important, the road heading out to the mesa is 3.5 miles of full-on dirt. If there is any forecast of rain, you need a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Any car will not make it. Rain hit me and I was literally almost stranded out there, with no resources and little water left. Otherwise, the trail is really wonderful, elevation gain is very steep providing you with great sweeping views.
