San Lorenzo Canyon

San Lorenzo Canyon Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Hidden in the foothills of Polvadera Mountain outside Socorro, San Lorenzo Canyon is the central feature of a network of sandstone cliffs and convoluted rills. Tilted layers of rock tower above the broad floor of the main canyon, but the claustrophobic side canyons are the main attraction.

In the mile-long canyon, hikers will find more than a dozen inviting entrances into the cliffs that are large enough to enter on foot. Some side canyons are mere slices in the rock carved by countless gully washers; a few have a broad, sandy bottom broken by ledges; and others splinter off into narrow, intertwined fingers. A few of the larger cracks twist and climb to the rim above."

"Here’s the challenge: hike 2 miles of San Lorenzo Canyon without getting lured into any caves, slots, or scrambles to the rim. To accomplish such a task would require a deadened sense of natural curiosity or perhaps the unwavering determination of San Lorenzo (Saint Lawrence to the Anglos) himself."
