Potato Canyon

Potato Canyon Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The northern half of the long San Mateo Mountains holds one of New Mexico’s least-used wilderness areas, the Withington. Because this wilderness area is so far from the normal tourist routes, just driving to it can be an adventure. This range is for experienced hikers who can follow ill-defined trails.

Help is far away, so prepare carefully for any trip to the area. Potato Canyon, named for a rounded rock spire on a bordering ridge, holds the most accessible trail in the range. A walk on the brittle shales of the lower canyon is pleasantly shaded by a canopy of Arizona walnut and ends at a pretty waterfall."
