Melanie Hot Springs

Melanie Hot Springs Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This route offers easy access to small but wonderful hot springs. Scenic volcanic cliffs in the upper Gila River canyon provide a beautiful backdrop to an enjoyable soak. This upper stretch of the Gila River immediately below the bridge can provide quick year-round access to the off- river hot springs.

The gradient is virtually flat, dropping only 40 feet to the springs. However, the Gila River Trail (724) crosses the river seven times between the bridge and hot springs, so low water is essential for this route."

"A fantastic set of natural hot springs along a remote portion of the upper Gila River. Bathing opportunities include three little rock pools and a small warm waterfall. A short hike of 1.5 miles along and through the Gila River is required."

The hike was very beautiful; it was fun crossing the river today because the water wasn't too high and the current was manageable. It was difficult staying on the trail, and we got off track numerous times. With all the unnecessary criss-crossing, it ended up taking us over 6 hours to hike just over 4 miles! Also, we never found the hot springs, so we had to curb our disappointment in order to appreciate the beauty and serenity of our surroundings. We did meet some back-packers on the track, and they said this was their 3rd time back on this trail, and they never found Melanie Hot Springs even with a much more detailed description than the one provided by

A fantastic and challenging hike in the spring. The many river crossings, which are probably fairly benign most of the year, were over 6 ft deep in most places so required a swim across. However the current was not so strong that swimming was difficult. If you are seeking solitude, this is the place. I found two totally untouched natural hot springs in which I bathed undisturbed for several hours. I really didn't want to hike back!
