Lower Gila River

Lower Gila River Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Just getting to this remote gateway to the Gila carries its own excitement. Beyond is a spectacular canyon with majestic rock formations and Indian ruins. This excursion into the lower reaches of the Gila River provides an enjoyable introduction to big river canyon country at its finest. Dramatic cliffs define the wide valley on both sides.

Large alcoves used by prehistoric Native American hunters are certainly a worthwhile destination. However, a specific destination isn’t needed. The lower Gila is a great place to amble up and down for whatever distance you desire. Indeed, the surrounding country makes the trip a visual adventure. The only negative is the sometimes heavy ATV traffic in the first mile or two below the Wilderness boundary. If possible, avoid peak use weekends during spring and summer."
