Hillsboro Peak

Hillsboro Peak Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The huge Aldo Leopold Wilderness spans the crest of the Black Range from near Emory Pass to Diamond Peak 25 miles to the north. The wilderness boasts an extensive network of trails that sees few hikers.

The trail to Hillsboro Peak follows the southern border of the wilderness and offers fi ne views into the wilder reaches of the Black Range. The views along the Crest Trail and from the peak itself make this hike a New Mexico classic."

Laurence Parent
"A day hike to an active fire lookout tower on the summit of one of the highest peaks of the Black Range. When you do this hike, be sure to spend a little time in Kingston and Hillsboro, just down NM 152 from the trailhead. The sleepy little villages, with their old buildings and apple orchards, invite exploration. Paved NM 152 winds over the crest of the southern end of the mountains and provides the easiest access to Black Range trails. The trails leading from the pass are probably the most popular in the mountains, but they are still relatively lightly used"

Good trail. Deep snow on north slopes and dark timber. No trail broken through the snow about 1/2 mile from summit. Too deep. Had to turn back. 4 hours overall.
