Grudging Grave

Grudging Grave Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This short easy hike provides an interesting glimpse of early cowboy history in the Gila. The rough-and-tumble days of this era come to mind in a somber way when standing in respect at the foot of the grave, surrounded by burnt trees and cliffs along the West Fork.

Follow the heavily used West Fork Gila River Trail (151) where you’ll quickly make two crossings of the West Fork. You may also have to rock- hop across a wet side channel along the way. The trail leads across an open grassy meadow to a trail junction as well as the Wilderness boundary along the northern edge of the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. Turn left and follow the trail to the third river crossing. Recent flooding has relocated both the main river channel as well as the trail."
