Spirit Lake

Spirit Lake Professional Review and Guide

"The climb to Spirit Lake is a summer getaway from the tourist crowds in Santa Fe, but on weekends the Winsor Trail receives heavy use by hikers. The views from the trail are among the best in the southern Sangre de Cristos and encompass the Jemez Mountains, the Rio Grande Valley, and a close-up look at Santa Fe Baldy.

Fall colors are spectacular in this part of the range, making this a popular hike in late September. Spirit Lake itself holds rainbow and cutthroat trout, so take along a fi shing rod. A few campsites are in the woods surrounding the lake, but regulations require campsites to be more than 200 feet from the water."

While it's only 6 miles, it's definitely not for the inexperienced hiker. The last mile up trail 400 is very steep.... although the lake is well worth getting to. In my opinion it's a hike to work up to.... and the treasure at the end will be worth all the efforts to get there.

Almost a perfect day hike. Steep at the end to get to the lake, but otherwise moderate hiking. Well traveled.

nice, slightly strenuous trail. Good descriptions from trails.com. Goes thru some great aspens, then gets strenuous thru the last part from Wisnor to Nambe lake itself.
